340th monthly statement of grameen bank - end of 2008

While Grameen opened as a bank in 1983, the publication of its 348th monthly statement at end of Dec 08 suggests it started monthly reports in january 1980, following project trials that 4 people began in 1976.

At the end of dec 2008, Grameen Bamk reports a cumulative membership of 7.67 million, organised around 141000 centres and 2540 branches (rounding all to 3 figs). Grameen village centers are built to ensure that at most 60 village microentrepreneurs commune at any centre, and it is typical for a branch to comprise about 60 centres and so about 3500 members. Up to end December 2008, a total of 7.59 dollars of loans had been disbursed since inception.

EARLY HEALTH SOCIAL BUSINESS
Grameen monthly records feature the first major health and safety product - housing loans begun in mid 1980s where a single room structure was built to have monsoon proof roof, pillars so that it would not be blown over by a monsoon, and a pit latrine attached. These provided the most basic safety features for a village family - and the structiral design was awarded an Aga Khan prize for architecture. 666,000 housing loans are reported up to end 2008. Moreover, the title of the house and loan is put in the name of the woman, so that in the event of a divorce (see female founder of Grameen Bank's Mrs Begum's testimonies on the particularly disrespectful culture poor vilage women suffered in the early days), the man and not the women and children have to leave.

EARLY MEDIA SOCIAL BUSINESS
Grameen introduces mobile telephone ladies in 1996- an extraordinarly elap forward in ending digital divides. To date 354,000 village ladies have taken out loans to run a mobile phone franchise. Note that this means that the 14000 vilage centres are now one of te most extraoirdinary networks for hubbing life critical knowhow, market senstitive info and communicating urgent questions.

EARLY EDUCATION SOCIAL BUSINESS
Whilst education has featured in the 16 decisions that Grameen members elected from the start - one decision being we will send our children to primary school - two social bsuienss products are reported in every montly update:
the number of university stident loans that have been offered to vilage children - currently a cumulative 31000; and the number of scholarships for keeping children in secondary school currently a fast growing 70,000

Whilst every new Grameen Bank branch opens up around the poorest rural women, we should note that Grameen is now involved with a youth generation whose maternal investments aim to move them far beyond the poverty line. These extraordinary youngsters are among the brightest stars any developing nation has to look forward with and to.
